Torah Study - Bereshit

Parashah Bereshit (Genesis 1:1–6:8) opens with the majestic account of creation, where God speaks the universe into order -- forming light, sky, land, and life, culminating in humanity made in His image. Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden to walk in fellowship with God, but their disobedience introduces sin, fracture, and exile from the garden. What begins as perfect harmony quickly turns into a story of brokenness, as humanity chooses its own wisdom over God’s design.

The portion continues by tracing the spread of sin through the generations -- from Cain’s murder of Abel to the increasing corruption of the earth. Yet even in judgment, God’s mercy is evident, preserving a lineage through which His purposes will continue. The parashah closes with a sobering picture of humanity’s condition and a quiet note of hope in Noah, who finds favor in God’s eyes, setting the stage for redemption to unfold.
